Kate Batchelor

Kate Batchelor was born in Suffolk in 1961 to a farming family with roots in the East Anglian Fishing industry. Drawing and painting were always a strong part of her early life and she went on to study a Foundation Course at Lowestoft School of Art and then went on to study Wildlife Illustration at Dyfed College of Art in South West Wales where she graduated in 1985. After that she worked as a freelance illustrator creating work for many large organisations and publications. For the past 10 years Kate Batchelor has concentrated on her painting career where she has focused on her passion for marine and wildlife subjects.

About Rachael Linda: This fishing boat is the Rachel Linda at Aldeburgh, the only traditional clinker built fishing boat still working off Aldeburgh beach. In June I went to sketch the fishing boats but when I arrived they had all been scooped up (apart from Rachel Linda) and used in the set of Peter Grimes. I was lucky enough to get a ticket, which was a fantastic experience especially for someone who paints boats and studies the lives of the fishing communities of the Suffolk coast.
