Norwich School - James Stark
James Stark 1794 – 1859
Stark was a school fellow and friend of John Berney Crome and became an articled pupil of John Crome in 1811. Three years later he entered the Royal Academy Schools as a student. He became a member of the Norwich Society in 1812. He exhibited many times at the Royal Academy as well as the British Intuition and Suffolk Street. He became popularly known of “Stark of Norwich” Much influenced by Crome in his early work grove scenes and trees were his speciality, later in his life he moved to Windsor where he stylistically underwent a change moving away from the Crome / Hobbma influence to a more delicate palate, his subject matter varied. Still painting landscape but with more feel to the work.
