Peter Baldwin

Peter Baldwin graduated from Norwich School of Art in 1962. He studied under Michael Andrews and Jeffrey Camp.

I lived in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, until the age of 16. During this time, I formed a close attachment to the sea as subject and sanctuary.  I observed Benjamin Britten on his regular ‘thinking walks’; this romantic attachment to a particular place as a basis for universal themes has always been of particular interest.

I reconstruct these sources so that narratives are implied and symbols emerge, which are cryptic; a constant feature is the presence of figures and natural life forms.

I aspire to make art that is transcendent, questioning and quietly beautiful in terms of a relational

aesthetic and made distinct by means of the human hand.
