It will be seven years since Nicola’s last solo show at Mandell’s Gallery, located at the top of Norwich’s historic Elm Hill. As a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, her work is in collections around the world but Nicola always looks forward to exhibiting locally. “I live in rural Norfolk surrounded by fields and I work from imagination. I think the local environment seeps into my thoughts and emerges in my paintings and prints. This might explain why many Norfolk people and others with a country heart relate to my work and understand its visual language.”
Nature has had a lot of bad press recently with natural disasters and virus news grabbing our attention. This is an exhibition from one of Norfolk’s established artists helping to redress the balance and providing the viewer with images as antidote and reminders of some of the very best “Elements of Nature”.
Artist's Statement
Nicola Slattery Artist Statement: The subject is almost exclusively figurative and sometimes inspired by fiction or myth and frequently by events or emotions experienced or imagined. I am told that there is a hard to define but universally recognised element within each image that draws the viewer back to look again and again and I hope that this is true. In a world obsessed with analysis and interpretation, especially in relation to art, I do not want to be drawn into providing ready made answers to any questions that my work provokes. I am clear that realism is not what it is about. I simply want to create images which lend serenity and thoughtfulness and which allow any meaning to emerge for the viewer themselves. This meaning will vary from person to person and even from day to day for the same person as their moods change.
