IN THE LANDSCAPE

A selection of works on handmade paper from the artists archive using watercolour, gouache, coloured inks and candle wax as a resist

My paintings are in series and I work on several paintings at a time. Titles in paintings can be misleading. I see my work as free-standing visual objects without the need of any referencing but I have a starting point for everything I do.

The works on paper called “In the Landscape” reflect my experience of being in landscapes rather than of landscapes, recording specific places. I try to keep my titles as broad as possible leaving room for many interpretations but they are about the natural world.

They are unpopulated, romantic in style and intended to evoke an emotional response. They are about mood and atmosphere affected by light, weather, seasons and time-of-day.

I need my colours to be strong with a sense of dynamism to the finished work.

My training as a painter began at Chichester School of Art and then at Bath Academy of Art Corsham, where my tutors included William Scott and Terry Frost It was a traditional art school training with a strong emphasis on drawing particularly with the indefatigable Viennese tutor Litz Pisk. Her emphasis on the links between felt experience and drawing has strongly influenced my work.
