An opportunity to meet Pat Southwood and learn more about her practice.

KÖZO (Structure) brings together contemporary architectural form and traditional Japanese ceramic technique in Pat Southwood’s latest work, inspired by recent journeys through Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto, Southwood observes:

“The architecture of Japan is rich with not only traditional wooden structures but also breathtaking skyscrapers and stunning modern buildings; designs which seem to defy all the rules.”

Working with a high-fired stoneware clay, forms are thrown at the wheel or slabbed; surfaces employ the traditional Japanese technique of Mishima. The resulting pieces bridge time, line, and memory by placing an inherited ceramic technique in dialogue with contemporary architectural sources. The works ask to be encountered both visually and through touch.

Pat holds a BA in Ceramic Design from Anglia Ruskin and has run her studio on the Norfolk Broads since 1999. Shaped by a transformative woodfiring residency in Tokoname, Japan, she now crafts stoneware pieces using a sculptural black clay that highlights her passion for pattern and texture.
